This guide is an introduction to the research process that, while not being an exhaustive list of information resources available, should be helpful in getting started in your research about pollution.  Below you will find pointers to suggested research terms about pollution, materials in the library catalog about pollution, websites relevant to pollution, and links to library databases that contain information about pollution.  Please use our email reference service, contact us at (310) 434-4254, or visit us in the library at the reference desk if you need further assistance.

The following websites (in alphabetical order) will help you with your research on pollution:
  • California Clean Air Resources Board
    Includes air quality data and regulatory information for geographic regions throughout California.  Also includes California air pollution laws and the Federal Clean Air Act.   The Clean Air Resources Board is a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency.  The Board's mission is "to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources while recognizing and considering the effects on the economy of the state."
  • Congressional Research Service Reports
    Search for pollution or specific types of pollution in this collection of over 1200 Congressional Research Service (CRS) reports redistributed as a service of the National Library for the Environment which is maintained by the National Council for Science and the Environment, which is supported by nearly 500 academic, scientific, environmental, and business organizations.  CRS is part of the Library of Congress, and prepares its reports for the U.S. Congress.
  • Environmental Working Group (EWG)
    This not-for-profit environmental research organization presents original reports resulting from research and analysis of large state and federal databases and other resources.  Report topics include  toxics, farm subsidies, pesticides, drinking water and air pollution.
  • Noise Pollution Clearinghouse
    This directory  includes a newsletter plus extensive links to noise pollution resources. The Noise Pollution Clearinghouse is a national non-profit organization whose mission is "to create more civil cities and more natural rural and wilderness areas by reducing noise pollution at the source."
  • Santa Monica Heal the Bay
    An example of a local water pollution concern. The learning center includes a newsletter, fact briefs, education programs, research, and Bay links.  Heal the Bay is a non-profit environmental group "working to make Santa Monica Bay and Southern California coastal waters safe and healthy again for people and marine life."
  • TOXNET National Library of Medicine Specialized Information Services
    The Toxicology and Environmental Health Program (TEHIP) provides access to resources produced by TEHIP and by other government agencies and organizations.  These resources are searchable databases, including: Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), Genetic Toxicology (Mutagenicity) (GENE-TOX), Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System (CCRS), Toxicology Bibliographic Info. (TOXLINE), Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), and Chemical synonyms, Structure and More (ChemIDplus).
  • UNEP.Net Environmental Network
    Search for pollution or for specific types of pollution on this international website.   The United Nations Environmental Network includes thematic portals about climate change, freshwater, and Global Environment Outlook (GEO) data which includes over 300 different variables presented as national, regional and subregional statistics or as geospatial data sets (maps).
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
    Browse EPA Topics on this excellent and comprehensive resource to find all types of   information about all types of pollution.  See also the EPA's Environmental Atlas.

Academic Search Premier, MasterFile Premier
Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier provide full text for over 6200 periodicals including full text for more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975.
Science Full Text Select
Coverage includes popular science magazines as well as professional journals. Also covers The New York Times Science Section. Full text coverage begins in January 1995.
Health Source
Health Source: Consumer Edition offers information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Has full text for nearly 300 journals.
Business Source Elite
Full-text coverage of scholarly business, management and economics journals. Also includes publications covering topics such as accounting, banking, finance, international business, marketing, sales, etc. Business Source Elite offers full text for nearly 1,000 business publications and more than 10,000 company profiles.
Regional Business News
Regional Business News provides full text coverage for regional business publications. Includes coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.
National Newspapers (1985- current)
Local, regional and national news coverage from selected newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, USA Today, Christian Science Monitor.
Newspaper Source Plus
Provides selected full text for many U.S. and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 800 U.S. regional newspapers.
CountryWatch
Country Reviews provide geographical, political, economic, corporate and environmental information for every country in the world. Country Wire is compiled from the wire services on the latest political, economic, corporate, and environmental events on a country by country basis.
Encyclopedia Americana
Includes 45,000 articles, plus thousands of hypertext links to web sites featuring additional data. It is updated quarterly.
Encyclopedia, Funk and Wagnalls New World
Provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.
JSTOR

Philosophy and Religion Collection
