 U. S. Environmental Protection Agency: Wastes
The EPA's Office of Solid Wastes (OSW) regulates waste: ordinary garbage from households as well as solid and hazardous wastes created by industry and manufacturing. OSW is empowered to do so under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Goals of the RCRA include: "protection from the hazards of waste disposal; conservation of energy and natural resources by recycling and recovery; reduction or elimination of waste; and clean-up of waste which may have spilled, leaked, or been improperly disposed of.
Rotten Truth (About Garbage)
Created by the Association of Science-Technology Centers Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, this web page describes itself: "Rotten Truth (About Garbage) takes an in-depth look at the complex issues surrounding municipal solid waste. This on-line exhibition is organized into four major sections: What Is Garbage?, There's No 'Away' (explores how burying, burning, and recycling garbage doesn't really get rid of it), Nature Recycles, and Making Choices.
California Integrated Waste Management Board
This California-state web site declares that the mission of the Board "is to reduce waste, promote the management of all materials to their highest and best use, and protect public health and safety and the environment, in partnership with all Californians."
