This guide is an introduction to the research process that, while not being an exhaustive list of information resources available, should be helpful in getting started in your research about health care.  Below you will find pointers to suggested research terms about health care, materials in the library catalog about health care, websites relevant to health care, and links to library databases that contain information about health care.  Please use our email reference service, contact us at (310) 434-4254, or visit us in the library at the reference desk if you need further assistance.

WebMD
Contains information on diseases and conditions, pregnancy, diet and nutrition, drugs and herbs, health plans, Medicare, medical tests, clinical trials, and more. Features quizzes, and interactive tools (including a symptom checker). Searchable and browsable.
California Consumer Health Scope
Consumer information relating to health care, especially about choosing a healthplan and choosing a hospital. Also includes information about preventive health care.
Health Finder
A guide to health information sponsored by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health. Provides background on “on health care providers, ratings of hospitals and nursing homes, guides to health insurance, how to report fraud or make a complaint, and privacy issues” and health news.
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
Sponsored by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Provides articles, fact sheets, news and information on a variety of health topics.
The White House on Health Care
Provides current information on the health care issues our Government is addressing.

Library Databases relevant to health care

The following Santa Monica College Library online databases may contain material relevant to health care. Please note: you must be a Santa Monica College student, faculty or staff member to use these services.
CINAHL Plus with Full Text
Provides complete coverage of the professional literature in nursing, 14 allied health disciplines and health sciences librarianship. In addition, there are over 560 journals in full text.

Health Source
Health Source: Consumer Edition offers information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Has full text for nearly 300 journals.
Nursing Resources
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides more than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines and also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. Clinical Pharmacology provides access to information for prescription drugs, herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs. CINAHL provides indexing for over 500 journals in nursing and other allied health disciplines.
Medline
Search abstracts from over 4,600 biomedical journals for information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more.
Academic Search Premier, MasterFile Premier
Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier provide full text for over 6200 periodicals including full text for more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975.
