The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine  (NCCAM)
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1998, NCCAM is one of more than 27 institutes & centers composing the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  NCCAM supports and conducts basic and applied (clinical) research and research training on CAM.  For consumers and practitioners, the site provides  fact sheets, alerts and advisories, consensus reports, lists of clinical trials, and related federal links.  NCCAM and the National Library of Medicine have partnered to create CAM on PubMed,  providing easy access to alternative medicine information on MedLine.

New York Online Access to Health(NOAH) is a project of the City University of New York, the Metropolitan New York Library Council, the New York Academy of Medicine and the New York Public Library, that provides high quality health information, including information on alternative medicine, in English and in Spanish.  The site states clearly their mission and their criteria for selecting resources.
Alternative Medicine Foundation
This non-profit foundation seeks "to provide consumers and professionals with responsible, evidence-based information on the integration of alternative and conventional medicine".  In addition to the site's resource guides on alternative medicine, the foundation's main projects include the HerbMed database of links to scientific information about herbs and health, and TibetMed , a forum for Tibetan Medicine that emerged from the First International Congress on Tibetan Medicine held in 1998 in Washington D.C.
Alternative Medicine Homepage   
Created and maintained by a librarian at the Falk Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, this annotated list of web resources is an excellent starting point for research.  Links include databases, Internet resources, mailing lists and resources, government resources, practitioners' directories, AIDS & HIV alternative medicine resources, and related resources.
American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) This is the leading national resource connecting people with vital solutions for reaching a higher level of wellness.
National Council Against Health Fraud
This nonprofit organization is concerned with health fraud, misinformation and quackery as public health problems.  It provides position papers "based upon the principles of science that underlie consumer protection law" on topics such as acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal remedies, and homeopathy.

Library Databases relevant to alternative medicine

Search for periodical articles in four periodical databases, three out four of which are partially full-text databases. Cinahl results are  citations with abstracts only.  Databases may include magazine, newspaper and journal articles.  You can check College Source for formal courses of study for alternative medicine. Academic Search Premier, MasterFile Premier
Academic Search Premier and MasterFile Premier provide full text for over 6200 periodicals including full text for more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975.
Nursing Resources
Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides more than 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines and also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. Clinical Pharmacology provides access to information for prescription drugs, herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs. CINAHL provides indexing for over 500 journals in nursing and other allied health disciplines.
Health Source
Health Source: Consumer Edition offers information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Has full text for nearly 300 journals.
National Newspapers (1985- current)
Local, regional and national news coverage from selected newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, USA Today, Christian Science Monitor.
Encyclopedia Americana
Includes 45,000 articles, plus thousands of hypertext links to web sites featuring additional data. It is updated quarterly.
