cloning

This guide is an introduction to the research process that, while not being an exhaustive list of information resources available, should be helpful in getting started in your research about cloning.  Below you will find pointers to suggested research terms about cloning, materials in the library catalog about cloning, websites relevant to cloning, and links to library databases that contain information about cloning.  Please use our email reference service, contact us at (310) 434-4254, or visit us in the library at the reference desk if you need further assistance.

Suggested Research Terms

One of the really helpful things when searching for information about a topic is a short list of terms related to a topic.  We think the following terms will help with your research about cloning:
  • cloning
  • human cloning
  • human cloning--moral and ethical aspects
  • clone
  • human reproductive technology
  • genetic engineering
  • cell nuclei--transplantation
  • gene therapy
  • Human Genome Project
  • bioethics
  • stem cell(s)

Websites on cloning

The following websites will help you with your research on cloning:
  • Cloning Fact Sheet - Human Genome Project Information
The Human Genome Project is coordinated by the U.S. Dept. of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. The projects' goals are to identify all 30,000 genes in human DNA, and address the ethical, legal, and social issues that arise from the project. This Web site section gives an overview of cloning.
  • Bioethics.net: The American Journal of Bioethics Online
Bioethics.net and The American Journal of Bioethics provide a comprehensive debate of issues in bioethics. The site contains the current issue of the journal plus links to selected articles in back issues. Article topics include "Cloning," "Genetics," and "Bioethics".
  • Conceiving a Clone
ThinkQuest website on cloning that includes cloning techniques, profiles of scientists working on cloning, the cloning debate, regulations, and a cloning timeline. ThinkQuest Inc. is "a non profit organization which offers programs designed to advance education through the use of technology".
  • Cloning – A Webliography
This Webliography of resources about cloning is created and maintained by Susan K. Kendall, Ph. D. (Cellular and Molecular Biology), MSLIS, Health Sciences Librarian and Liaison for the Biomedical Sciences at Michigan State University Libraries. It is intended to help find the best, most reliable information about animal and human cloning available on the Web.
  • The Council for Responsible Genetrics (CRG)
The Council for Responsible Genetics (CRG) is a non-profit/non-governmental organization devoted to fostering public debate about the social, ethical, and environmental implication of genetic technologies. CRG addresses new genetic technologies in two broad program areas: human genetics, and commercial biotechnology and the environment. CRG publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, “Gene-Watch,” a national newsletter that continually monitors the ethical, social and ecological impacts of biotechnology.
  • Americans to Ban Cloning
Sponsored by a group of concerned Americans and U.S. based organization that promote a global, comprehensive ban on human cloning. Contain news, legislation, and commentary on the negative aspects of cloning.
  • President's Council on Bioethics: Cloning
Recommendations and commissioned papers on bioethics topics such as cloning and stem cell research.
